When Checkers from Cotton + Steel arrived in the shop, I knew I needed to sew something summery up. Checkers is the new basic from Cotton + Steel and it is gorgeous. It is 100% cotton, but it has a slightly different feel and drape than regular quilting cotton. It is also 50” wide so it is perfect for garments.
I used the ½” gingham which comes in 11 colors. I let AJ pick her own color. After changing her mind several times, she landed on the Sky Blue.
I had wanted to make the True Bias Mini Colfax dress for a while now and it was perfect for this. I love this pattern. It took me longer to assemble and cut out the pattern then it did to make the dress. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow.
The Mini Colfax is an A-line silhouette dress with a front yoke and exposed bias binding around the neckline and armholes. There are two different views. I went for the easy one without pockets but I did decide to do the yoke and binding in a plain white Kona cotton for contrast. Both versions include a hem facing. Even though I cut it out, I ended up just using my hemmer foot and creating a narrow rolled hem at the bottom. This made it a little quicker and I liked the way it looked so I could show off more of the gingham.
Even the back is adorable. I kind of want one for myself, which is convenient since this pattern also comes in adult size: Colfax Dress Pattern.
